Four masonry checks to make before Utah’s first freeze
Freeze-thaw cycles can turn a small opening into a larger repair. A quick fall walk-around helps you catch the places where water can enter brick, block, stone, mortar, and outdoor hardscape before winter arrives.

Look closely at mortar joints. Check for cracks, loose sections, and joints that have pulled away from the masonry—especially near corners, windows, doors, and wall caps.

Follow the water. Make sure downspouts, sprinklers, and grading direct water away from masonry walls, steps, and patios instead of keeping them wet.
- 03
Inspect caps and horizontal surfaces. Chimney caps, wall caps, steps, and ledges take the most weather. Watch for open joints, movement, or places where water can sit.

Check patios and walkways for movement. Uneven flagstone or pavers can hold water and create trip points. Early corrections are usually simpler than waiting through another winter.
